Why you should consider switching to all natural products for your safety and health
How are cosmetics related to health? They are actually directly related. Because I take a holistic approach to nutrition and wellness, I take into account all factors that can impact health. What does this mean? From a holistic perspective, what we put on our body is just as important as what we put inside of our body such as food. Makeup and cosmetics seems like such a small aspect of day to day life but their impact can actually be quite substantial.
First of all, cosmetic ingredients are absorbed into the bloodstream through the skin. Any product you put on your skin, for that matter, is absorbed. For that reason, products containing harmful ingredients cause serious problems.
Secondly, makeup and cosmetics products can be contaminated with a huge range of harmful ingredients. For instance, heavy metals can be a culprit including things like arsenic, mercury, and lead. Mercury can also damage a developing fetus and cause kidney damage. Additionally, lead is in lipstick, blush, lotion, and powders and can affect brain development in children. As a result, long term use can really take a toll on your health.
Other ingredients that are cause for concern include:
carbon black – often used in mascara
- has been classified as a possible human carcinogen
phthalates – often found in perfumes and nail polish
- can cause early puberty in boys
- endocrine disruptor
- possible human carcinogen
- can cause problems with the reproductive system
parabens – commonly used preservative
- significant endocrine disruptors
- upsets hormone balance
asbestos – known carcinogen that causes lung damage
- can contaminate talcum powder
- used to absorb moisture

Switching to Natural Cosmetics
Above all, there is no better time than now to make the switch to more natural beauty products for the sake of your body and health!
When deciding how to start switching your products over to natural, I recommend starting with the products that you use most often as these will have the most impact. That may be foundation for one or mascara for another person. For me it’s mascara – I can’t leave the house without it so it is a daily product for me and is where I started.
For that reason, I switched first to 100% Pure’s Fruit Pigmented Ultra Lengthening Mascara in the black tea shade. 100% Pure uses sustainable and natural ingredients AND do zero animal testing. Don’t you love them already? As a dog mama, this was a big deal for me. In addition, they also pigment their products using natural ingredients from fruits, vegetables, and teas. How amazing is that? The mascara also smells SO good, I can’t help but smell it every time I use it. Some other great fruit pigmented products they offer are:
