How Switching From Coffee to Matcha Green Tea Helped My Anxiety
Anxiety and caffeine began to have a significant correlation for me and my body after my anxiety hit a peak. If you asked me a couple years ago if I could ever give up coffee, I would have laughed and said “absolutely not”. I was always a coffee drinker and a caffeine addict at that. I was a multiple cups of coffee a day kinda gal. Never in a million years did I think I could quit coffee but about 1.5 years ago I did just that. I quit coffee for a few months after my anxiety spiked exponentially. I didn’t drink anything with caffeine for a few months and then started drinking matcha green tea.
Anxiety and Caffeine
I’m sure you’re wondering why the heck I gave up coffee and switched to matcha. I’ll tell you. Anxiety.
Caffeine can increase anxiety. Sure I drank coffee and energy drinks for years without it increasing my anxiety but my body today is MUCH different than my body 1, 2 or even 5 years ago. Our bodies + health are ever changing. As we age, based on our diet, our stress level, environmental factors, our physical activity, etc. Matcha can be a better alternative for those with anxiety than coffee because it has 1/3 less caffeine. Matcha also contains L-theanine, an amino acid that promotes relaxation and when combined with caffeine makes you feel both calm and alert. It also doesn’t cause the same spike + crash that coffee does and provides more sustained alertness. If you suffer from anxiety and still drink coffee, try switching to matcha for a few weeks and see if you notice improvement.
Does Coffee or Caffeine Cause Anxiety?
No, by no means am I saying that coffee is causing anxiety. But that caffeine of any kind can influence anxiety – even matcha. When my anxiety was at a peak, I gave up all caffeine so that I could clear myself of outlying factors that were exacerbating my anxiety and begin to find peace. Basically what I’m getting at is simply switching your coffee for matcha will not solve your anxiety problems. But it is a simple and easy place to start. Our diets and what we put in our bodies is very powerful but it also the easiest to control.
I now drink matcha everyday and don’t miss coffee one bit. I love my matcha lattes in the morning made with unsweet oat milk or soymilk, raw honey or monk fruit, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla. Sometimes I also add in some adaptogens or collagen! This simple change in my caffeine intake has helped dramatically with my anxiety.
Buying Matcha Powder: Quality Matters
If you’re looking for a good matcha brand to try I highly recommend Tenzo Tea. It’s the only matcha powder I drink anymore. It’s gluten free, vegan, paleo, AND organic. I love Tenzo because they are very transparent about their sourcing and practices. Their source their matcha from Japan and ensure it follows their strict quality requirements, including handpicking each leaf to make sure it’s just right. Tenzo’s matcha is a beautiful bright green – that’s how you know it’s the good stuff. Do not, I repeat, do not buy and use matcha that is anything less than bright green. The quality is not even comparable. Give Tenzo a try and see for yourself! Use my code TENZOAS for 25% off your first order.
If you do decide to try elsewhere, please make sure to stick with ceremonial grades only and do your research to make sure whoever you get it from is sourcing it from Japan. Organic is also ideal to avoid consuming harsh chemicals. Remember that good, reputable companies will not attempt to hide where their matcha comes from and are willing to give you all the details upfront. Research before you purchase!
