Natural Management of Heartburn and Reflux

Raise your hand if you’ve ever felt personally victimized by heartburn or acid reflux 🙋🏽‍♀️🙋🏽

So what even is heartburn and reflux?
It’s caused by your lower esophageal sphincter (basically the middle man between your tummy and esophagus) not closing all the way. Stomach acid then flows the wrong way causing those icky feelings like burning and chest pain.⁠ I like to compare it to leaving a door open. When the door doesn’t close all the way, a draft comes in. So imagine the lower esophageal sphincter as a door and your stomach and esophagus on either side of that door. ⁠

If you deal with this problem, there are many safe ways to naturally manage it:

🤸 avoiding high physical activity after meals⁠
🛌 not laying down after eating⁠
👄 eating slower⁠ and chewing more⁠
🥘 eating smaller meals⁠
🥃 avoiding carbonated drinks⁠
📓 keeping a food diary to track your flare ups and connect them to food (common foods include spicy foods, tomatoes, onions, alcohol, garlic)⁠

But what about when you have heartburn or reflux and want quick relief? My favorite method is apple cider vinegar. I use 1 tbsp @bragglivefoodproducts ACV “with the mother” + 8 oz warm water + some raw unfiltered honey (1 tsp or so) and sip it like tea. I promise the taste is not as bad as you think and it really works!

TIP: Make sure not to take it straight or it can actually be harder on your stomach, esophagus, and teeth! You can also take this tonic before eating your meals to help digestion and combat heartburn/reflux from starting.⁠
